Three Heads

These three heads are simply colograph plates which have been painted and developed to create a new piece of work, they show the beginnings of my collage work.  The use of my own profile also shows my work becoming much closer to a more traditional idea of self-portraiture.

This more personal approach has become central as I have used photographs of myself, sometimes distorted or fragmented  along with card, paint or other media that I had used when making colograph plates to make mixed media collage.

Stairway

In Stairway I have used a fragmented photograph of myself, slotted through a staircase to explore personal frustrations.

Symbols,  such as the fish in the sky that suggest an element of ‘magic’, as well as freedom and movement,  recur in my work and they combine with other  imagery, like  the  spirals of cascading hair in ‘Stairway’ (a reminder of the Rapunzel story)  to build a decorative aesthetic that operates as a visual equivalent to the literary tradition of magical realism.
